ARWA Visioning Session. Leader: Diana Cranstoun. A video of the visioning session to map out the future of ARWA. Recorded January 14, 2023
Dialogue to Die For. Leader: Victoria Chatham. In its simplest definition, dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. As authors, we need to portray those conversations on the page concisely. Dialogue shows your readers who your characters are, what they want or don’t want, conveying information about them and their situations. It can move your story forward and give clues to the reader. It can break up your paragraphs to provide much-needed white space to make it easier for your reader to read. In this presentation, we’ll discuss the best ways of writing what your characters have to tell each other and the reader, the he said/she said issue, why not to write in dialect, how to address dialogue in historical novels, and punctuate your dialogue correctly, and so much more. Outline Your Novel. Leader: Sandra Wickham. In this workshop I’m going to share my system I’ve mashed together from learning from many of the GREATS in our industry, as well as my own experience writing and co-writing novels. This workshop will work great if you already have a novel idea, maybe some characters and thoughts already in mind. Or, it will be fantastic if you have a novel that’s not quite working for some reason or a novel you’re stuck on. You can always save the information for once you have a novel idea. I would normally host this course over two to five days so to keep it shorter we won’t be doing the brainstorming exercises in this workshop. We will be covering key considerations for your novel, different approaches to outlining (lots of options!) as well as a deep dive into storyboarding a three act structure and everything that goes in every section!
